8 Tips To Better Video Marketing
While I agree that video, done right, can be a great benefit to your marketing efforts, video gone to the dark side can turn potential clients away faster than meeting an ugly thug in a dark alley.
So, what makes a good video, and what makes a video turn to the dark side? I’ll sum it up in one word…
PROFESSIONALISM
Okay, let’s look at some ways to present a professional video, or not…
First, let’s talk about setting. Where should you record your video? There is no disputing the expertise of Andy Jenkins when it comes to video marketing, however when he released his video series to market Video Boss he seems to have sparked a craze that most people just can’t pull off. Andy was walking on the shoreline of the ocean while he recorded his video. Looks great, lovely scenery, shows him as a normal person. Why can’t everyone pull it off?
POOR SOUND QUALITY
How many videos have you seen recently with people sitting in their backyard, or walking outside, or sitting on a deck or hotel balcony, and you can’t hear a word they are saying because of wind blowing across the microphone, or airplanes passing overhead, or a siren in the background? If I can’t hear and understand you, I most likely won’t choose to do business with you. It won’t matter how great you look silhouetted by the sunset, or how successful you look sitting on an expensive hotel balcony.
Then there is timing and format for your video. Now this is just my opinion, but if you set your video up with no way for me to know how long the presentation is and no way to pause it, I’m not highly likely to watch the entire thing, unless I’m already determined to do business with you.
Be respectful of people’s time. Keep your videos short. People don’t have time to watch a 30 minute video that drones on and on about how great and wonderful you are, or your product is. While all that may be true, if you just spend your time with this type of presentation, it’s unlikely that your prospects will watch the entire video, or if they do, they may not watch future videos you produce.
Use some type of professional presentation software. Personally I like PowerPoint and Camtasia. There are many other good options out there. Don’t be cheesy and film someone holding up hand written poster boards. Seriously, I’ve seen this done! It looks like you have no clue what you are doing and the likelihood is that you will lose your prospective customer’s confidence.
If you use presentation software, you have some options in how you present your message.
Many people right now are choosing to write their entire script on slides and just read the slides to me. Really? Guys, I can read and unfortunately much of the time better than the presenter. If you choose this option, rehearse the script until it flows easily off your tongue. I’ve seen “professional” presentations where the presenter stumbled around so much I was convinced that they had never even seen the script before they recorded the video.
You can also choose slides that contain pictures, with or without captions. This is a better option if you are concerned about not reading your slides word for word, or want to ad lib just a bit.
You can also step in front of the camera and show the world your smiling face. If this is the option for you, please maintain a professional manner. Dress the part. You don’t have to be in a suit and tie or a dress, but please don’t look like you just stepped off the stage as the drummer for a heavy metal band, unless you’re marketing your heavy metal band.
And by all means DON’T flirt with the camera!! No matter what gender you are, flirting with your prospective customers will offend a large segment of them.
I hope these simple tips will start you on the road to truly effective video presentations.
Should you be using video? If you do it right, ABSOLUTELY. If you make it cheesy or unprofessional, it’s more likely to hurt you than to help you.
Until next time…

Hi Vanessa,
Followed your blog from TSA Tribe. Great tips for video marketing especially on some do’s and don’ts. I haven’t heard of the flirting with the camera but that’s something to be mindful of.

Thanks for the comment. I appreciate your feedback. I can’t say that I’ve seen very many people flirt with the camera, but when they do I’m out of there pretty quickly. I look forward to connecting with you again.

Good tips Vanessa, especially the one on sound quality.
Nothing worse than background noise.
I realize if someone is making a video at an event background noise is unavoidable, but wireless mics are not expensive and are a good investment.

Yes, I think poor sound quality is probably my single biggest pet peeve for marketing videos. And you are right, it’s not that difficult or expensive to do it more professionally. I don’t look for perfection, just professionalism.

Vanessa,
Great tips. I’m only now starting to play more with videos. I’ve done some with just me in them, the big secret I’ve found is good lighting! Now, I’m putting together some with powerpoint and imovie and those are more fun and my video blog this week is just FUNNY!
Thanks for your great suggestions,

Hi Vanessa,
You have discussed many key elements that must be present to make our videos effective. Each one of them falls under PROFESSIONALISM that you correctly identified as what makes or breaks a video.
We’ve had some luck with outdoor videos in the beautiful scenery but it takes extra work and sometimes extra takes to achieve the right sound quality.
Your clients are in good hands with you as they pursue video marketing.
Based on the knowledge you’ve shared here, we look forward to seeing one of your videos!

Yes, you are correct that you can have great success with outdoor videos. I love them, when they are good. Unfortunately, many people don’t go to the trouble of doing the extra takes and decide that what they get the first time around is “good enough”. We are in a marketing era where the consumer is intelligent, well informed, and has many, many choices of vendor. “Good enough” just isn’t good enough anymore.
I hope everyone will take your advice and step up their game.

Hi Vanessa,
I love these tips. I recently started doing videos and I appreciate the tips. I especially love the one on background noise and wind. I have heard many videos with wind so bad you couldn’t hear much of anything.

Vanessa,
You are so right. I hear so many gurus saying, “you have to make videos, and be authentic.” Authentic doesn’t mean rolling out of bed and making a video.
Rehearsing is the best advice. If you rehearse, you won’t sound dull. And put some emotion in your voice. I want to ‘feel’ the person in the video.
Thanks for the great reminders. Off to rehearse.

You should have heard my first attempt at a video. I had rehearsed, I had great information, I had a killer slide presentation, and I would have bored an ADD child to sleep. Sometimes we only learn by experience. Sometimes we have to do multiple takes. Sometimes we have to listen from the viewers point of view. And sometimes we have to do our best and get it out there. Our customers and prospects will let us know if it’s not good.
That is not to say that we shouldn’t make every effort to produce the very best video we can. And presentation is a large part of the battle. I’ll bet you’re going to do just fine, because you have an attitude of being the best you can be.

I did. I wrote this just for you… Just kidding, but I’m really glad that it felt that way for you. That is my point with many of my blog posts. Sharing with people how to connect with their readers, as if they wrote things just for them. I try to do this through both my subject matter and my writing style. I think people can also learn very well by example.
Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your lovely comment. I look forward to connecting again soon.

Hi Vanessa,
I’m still in the goofy ooh look a red light and a microphone I now can’t speak properly phase. But slowly improving. I’m not sure it’s necessary to blush when it’s only me in the room but I manage it anyway.
So great tips there, thanks very much. Of course, the question is…. Where’s your video?! Come on show me how it’s done. I dare you

Yep, you’re right. I have to step up and show some examples. I’ve been waiting to get my entire video campaign ready to launch, but I think your challenge has spurred me to upload a couple of videos I did for my personal use. I’m willing to share them with everyone, for their personal use, too. They are basically videos to get you in the mindset of health and fitness and creating abundance in your life. I’ll see about getting them uploaded this weekend.

great tips vanessa… please don’t watch my most recent video as i violate many of your rules. (but now i know what i need to do better!!!)
i also think there is value in revealing faults and imperfections in what i do as a network marketer. i want my prospects and team members to watch me and believe, “if she can do it, i can do it too!” not being perfect and polished every time helps achieve this.
glad to have connected with you in TSA vanessa =)

It’s all a learning process. Trust me, the first time I produced a video, I was nowhere near understanding any of these tips. Showing the learning process can be really encouraging to those coming behind you. Your organization will surely appreciate knowing that you started out making oopses and progressively got more and more polished. That will give them the knowledge that you don’t start out being a polished diamond… You start as a diamond in the rough and become polished by the bumps and lumps along the way. What’s important is just to get started.

Camtasia and PowerPoint are my favorite tools. You can make a very professional video presentation with these tools with very little effort and a very small learning curve.
I love your comment on people reading the screens word for word. You can tell they are not sure about the content. Being able to do the video with out a script at all is the most powerful, because you will really come across genuine.
I usually write a script of what I am going to say in the video and by the time I start recording I forget about the script and just start talking… LOL Good and bad I guess…..

Thank you for the insightful comments. It sounds like you’ve got a good handle on producing some great videos for marketing. I like the people who obviously had a script, but know it well enough to ad lib a good portion of the words.

Video is where I am lacking at the moment. I plan to start up a new channel in the near future, so it’s great to read posts like yours to take some notes, to help me do better videos. My son is a whiz at the Flip, so I need to put him to work. He is also good at editing, so it’s time to get going. Thanks for the great info.

Jump right in. Video is lots of fun, but can be a bit intimidating until you’ve done one or two. You have a great advantage in having someone who can operate your camera and edit your footage. Just remember, have fun and be yourself, only stepped up a notch for the camera.

Hi Vanessa,
Excellent posting, thanks for your tips I find them to be very helpful. I just did my first video a few days ago and I could have use your tips.I would definitely keep these tips in mind for my next video. I agree with you, making a video is lots of fun. I’m still trying to learn powerpoint.
Thanks for the useful tips,

PowerPoint is definitely a learning process. If you have Camtasia it is also a learning process. However, the two work in conjunction very well and allow you to do some really cool things with your videos.

I so glad to connect with you here. Welcome.
I think the thing that bothers people more than anything else on the internet is a dis-respect for their time. People are busy and just don’t always have an hour to listen to something you could have said in 15 minutes.
Thanks for your comments. I look forward to connecting again soon.

Great advice on videos. I’ve seen some of those bad examples you give as well.
Like you, I think one of the biggest pet peeves I have is when people are evidently reading a teleprompter… or a script. Look at the camera!!
Be natural, but always bring your videos a step up in professionalism.
