Life Lesson Learned

This week I celebrated my birthday.  My husband told me we could go to dinner anywhere I wanted. Well, since I choose to celebrate my birthday for a week, I figured I could wrangle at least two dinners. So, on my actual birthdate I chose a nice, cozy spot where we could just talk and enjoy each others company.  For my second dinner I chose my favorite buffet.

As I was filling my plate I discovered one of my favorite vegetables being offered. It was cut into tiny little pieces, and for some strange reason they had decided to offer a pair of tongs to dish it out with.  As I was dishing, only able to pick up about 3 tiny pieces at once, I felt a presence behind me. Glancing over my shoulder, I discovered a very tall man, who appeared to be made of solid muscle. He looked like the type who could crush a can on his forehead. I smiled and asked if I was in his way. He replied that he was planning to have the same vegetable I was working diligently to dish out, but he was happy to wait.  I finished dishing my serving and stepped aside to let him get his portion.  And then it happened…

The grill cook was busy washing the floor and somehow lost his hold on the hose.  Apparently the sprayer was locked on and as it fell to the ground it completely hosed down the man who was standing where I had been just moments before. In that moment my mind locked onto one thought…

TIMING IS EVERYTHING

As I thought about this life lesson, I realized that it applies to everything we do. It also applies to every part of our business.

In business, it’s not so much about being in the right place at the right time, although that does play a part. It’s about seeing the opportunity when it arrives and not holding on to ideas whose time has passed.

Say you were looking to start a business today. Do you think opening a new video rental store would be a great idea? Probably not, considering the availability of online rentals and even free video sites. Well, what about a book store? The small book stores in my area are struggling to compete with sites like Amazon.com.

The same principle applies in marketing your business. I see businesses coming online who are bound and determined to use the same marketing methods that worked 10 years ago, many of which haven’t worked in at least 7 or 8 years. Why do they do this?

Part of it is a lack of training and experience. Part is because they are listening to mentors who haven’t actually marketed on the internet, except their own training course, in 10 years. Some of the reason lies in the fear of the new and unknown. Social Media falls into this category for many people.

Many people who decide to try this “social media thing” go sign up for a facebook account and get a twitter account, and immediately start “friending” and “following” everyone they can. Then one of their new friends says, “Hey, you gotta try this game. It’s absolutely the best!” So they start with that game, and it’s fun, so they start playing a couple more games. Next, the spam messages from all the people they’ve “friended” and “followed” start coming in, saying “buy my stuff”. Soon, the new marketer is spending hours everyday playing games and sorting through spam. At this point, they likely decide that “social marketing” doesn’t work and is just too time consuming.

Does this really mean that social media doesn’t work or that the timing is wrong. No. Absolutely not. Social media is working for countless people and experts predict it will be “THE” marketing method for at least the next decade.

Do you want to get on that train, but don’t know how? Do you realize that your business needs social marketing, but have no clue how to control the spam or manage your time?

SocialBeeOnline can help. We have packages ranging from getting on board with 2 or 3 social networks and teaching you how to manage them quickly and without heartache, to full management of your online marketing effort, both in social media and other marketing methods. Vanessa

  • Hi Vanessa,
Great Post! I have to admit, I fought the idea of social media for a long time.
Then I finally realized in today’s world you can not have a successful business without it. It has been the best thing I have ever done for my business. You’re offering a great service. I believe most people who don’t market online don’t do so because they simply don’t know how and they are afraid of the unknown.

I have to agree with you on the reasons that most people don’t use social media. I’m glad have dived in. It appears you’ve learned to navigate the waters pretty successfully.

I did feel for him, but he took it pretty well. I saw him about 15 minutes later, back at the same dish.

Thanks for stopping by, I look forward to seeing you again.

  • Hey Vanessa! What a great post. I like the analogy with the timing at the restaurant. It is so true that in business timing is everything. I agree that so many people try old school methods that do not work in this day and age. Thanks for sharing this great information.

  • Hi Vanessa, Happy Belated Birthday. It sounds like it was enjoyable. I’m a “July baby” too :) Love the story (that poor guy) and oh yes, timing IS everything!!

Timing is a fundamental component of marketing — too many people fail (“oh this doesn’t work) because they think in terms of “one and done marketing” without understanding that timing is everything (just because the timing isn’t right today (for your product or service)… This is why companies spend millions (if not billions of dollars) on advertising – to get their brand in the minds of people so that when the timing is right….

    Thanks, Laura

You are so right. Timing in marketing is one of the most key components. Most people quit just about the time they have actually put in enough effort to start seeing a return.

So glad you stopped by, and thank you for the birthday wishes. And a happy birthday to you as well…

  • Hi Vanessa
What a great life lesson this one is, timing sure is everything. Knowing when it is the right time for something can sometimes be tricky and not as obvious as you example here.

Thanks for coming by and for your comments. You’re right, this was a kind of board over the head moment. But if you keep your eyes open, these lessons pop up frequently.

I look forward to connecting with you again.

  • Vanessa,
    First off, Happy Birthday! :)

You are so correct that timing is everything. What most new marketers don’t understand is the word “social.” Finding the balance between personal & business, spamming and connecting is so crucial. There is a time and a place for everything, so learning the in’s and out’s of social media will assist you in moving forward in your dreams.

    Thanks for sharing this,
    Val ;)

You have really hit the nail on the head. So many people think that social media is just a platform to blast their “buy my stuff” ads. The other error in my opinion is trying to automate their social contacts too much. It is so nice to actually learn something meaningful about someone when they send out a post, tweet, or status update. It shouldn’t be the only thing going out, and it definitely needs to stay professional, but I like to know when someone has a birthday, for example.

Thanks for stopping by, Val. I look forward to connecting with you again.

  • Hello Vanessa,

Enjoyed your post and yes timing can be everything…As far as social media, yes, its going to do nothing but grow. And as others comments here state connections are one thing but what good are they if your not taking some time to really connect with your new found social friends.

Stop and smell the roses along the way and add value as you go and you will connect with someone in your social network that can benefit many.

    Keep up the great work…

    Wishing you all my best:)

Thank you for your thoughtful comments. You are so right on the social media front. Having lots of followers or FB friends does nothing for you unless you are creating connections. It’s definitely NOT about shoving “buy my stuff” tweets and updates down the throats of your online friends. If that is your agenda, you’re going to be dead in the water.

Thanks for stopping by. I look forward to connecting with you again.

      Live with passion and purpose,

  • I like the idea of seeing opportunities and capitalizing on them, therefore somewhat creating your luck. If you just throw everything to the wind with no action or initiative being at the right spot at the right time will rarely happen. In regards to social media, it allows you to be in many places at the same time, increasing your odds of success.
