What Type of Traveler are You?

Today I decided to take some time to decompress, so we drove from the deserts of Phoenix to the gorgeous pine covered mountains of Show Low, Arizona. The twisty, windy road travels through the mountains, climbing up the peaks and then dropping down into the valleys.

There was breathtaking scenery along the way. And the destination was more than worth the journey.

Along the route I started to notice distinct types of travelers. There were those who slammed on the brakes at every curve or downhill grade. It seemed as if they were very afraid and didn’t trust their drivings skills.

Then, there were those who were so focused on the destination that they were willing to break laws and endanger other people to get there just a tiny bit faster.

Finally, there were those travelers who knew their destination, but were still able to enjoy the journey. They were able to travel along with the flow of traffic, stop and enjoy a scenic view, look at the roadside flora, and watch the wildlife play. When their small break was over they had the confidence to get back on the road again.

My mind drew parallels with the way business owners utilize the internet.

So, let me ask you… What type of driver are you, on the internet super highway?

Are you on the road, but scared to death? Afraid to move forward, yet afraid to get off and be left behind? Perhaps you’re not even sure of your destination. But hey, everybody else is on this road, so you must need to be here too, right?

If you are this type of driver, my best advice to you is to find a mentor or someone you can trust, who has navigated this road before. Learn from them and let them guide you to gain the confidence you need to safely navigate to your destination.

Or, are you so focused on your destination that you are completely oblivious to the risks you take, unable or unwilling to enjoy the journey or slow down enough to help another traveler along the way? Do you have a tendency to take on the world as a solo act, believing that you are the only one who can do things “right” in your business? This type of traveler runs the risk of physical or mental burnout, or both. You may reach your destination only to find that you have sacrificed your family, friends, health, or ???

If you are this type of traveler be aware of what your focus is doing, not only to yourself, but to those you care most about. Perhaps you can take a small step back and look at what needs to happen for you to reach your destination. Then think about the things that take a large amount of your time, or that you just simply don’t enjoy doing. Perhaps you can contract someone to take on one of those tasks.

Now, don’t go contract out a bunch of tasks at once. First, you’ll need time to work closely with someone to feel comfortable that they will handle the task to your standards. Second, you don’t really want to jump into a new role of supervising a bunch of outsource contractors. Outsource one task or role at a time. When that one is running smoothly, then look at the next task to outsource.

Finally, you may be a traveler who knows where you’re going, has a clear plan to get there, and stops long enough to enjoy the precious moments with friends and family, possibly even helping another traveler along the way.

If this is you, you probably don’t need me to tell you to get help when you need it. You likely surround yourself with other happy, confident travelers. These are people who can make our journey so much more joyous.

And when the mud slide holds you up, get the real story, be patient, and stay the course. Others may turn around and go back the way they came, but you’ll get where you want to go faster if you make informed decisions.

Learn to relax and enjoy the journey. After all, the key to the internet lifestyle is in the word “lifestyle”.

Until next time…

Live with passion and purpose,
Vanessa

  • Hey Vanessa,

Another great post! I think I’ve had some of the same drivers behind me on the road, pushing you along, in such a hurry! lol:)

I’m definitely the middle type; I want to get on and get work done, but I also like to take time out to smell the roses and chill! And other people’s help and advise is absolutely essential! We can learn so much from each other!

As you say, it is all about the ‘lifestyle’ we all want!

      Hi Sue:

Welcome back. Being that middle type of driver can be good, as long as you take the time to smell the roses and chill. Just keep asking for help when you need it.

Anything I can do, just let me know.

  • Hi Vanessa,
It can be very overwhelming to travel this road at first. You made some very good points!Creating a good balance is the best road to take eventually if we can find that road. The perfectionist in me has a hard time letting go once in a while but I am definitely focusing on that daily!!

So glad you stopped by to visit. I hope you’ll be a regular reader.

Having coaching people for several years in how to market on the internet, I’ve seen more than my share of overwhelmed “scared bunnies”. I’m glad I was able to help them navigate the road, and really hope all those who are still struggling to reach their destination will seek out someone to help them.

I think we all have a bit of that perfectionist, the trick is to be able to say “thank you for sharing” and then let go anyway.

I look forward to seeing you here in the future. I’m going to head over and read your newest post. I’ve been coaching for some time, and this is one of the basics I’ve been teaching people. It’s the thing that stops most people in their tracks. I’ll bet I can pick up some pointers to pass along.

  • Hi Vanessa,

Love the analogy. I definitely began my journey in the first stage but fortunately didn’t stay there for long. Proceeded onto the next – driven by action with sights on ultimate goal but not taking the time to “smell the roses” along the way but thankfully I find myself now at the 3rd stage. So, definitely a progression :)

Excellent post and you really gave us something to seriously think about.

Have an Awesome Day! Blessings, Laura

      Hi Laura:

Glad you stopped by and thank you for leaving such a thoughtful comment. You are very right. It is a progression, and the more we ask for assistance and look to others for expertise, the quicker we generally move through the stages. I am so glad to be past the early stages and able to stop long enough to help other struggling travelers. It’s very nice to be able to give back at this stage.

I look forward to our continued connection. Let me know if I can ever assist you.

  • Hi Vanessa, I love your analogy with drivers. You did a great job describing how lost one can be on the internet highway. It is not easy. I just wrote a couple of articles about time management. There is always a next best thing showing up. It never ends, unless you stop the flow and focus on the things that are really import for you. It makes a big difference. Thanks for sharing, I hope many will read this. I will spread the word for you.

Thanks for stopping by and for your kind words. That “next best thing” really drives me nutty sometimes. Clients are always saying things like, “I’m so confused. I have 6 different products and they all say something different.” I tell them to STOP buying anything new, until they have got something going on the net first. It’s so easy to get distracted.

That’s the biggest reason that I want my clients to have a destination firmly in mind, and get the route mapped out. This way the side roads are not so tempting.

I’ve hosted some classes on time management recently. I’ll have to go back and check out your posts on the subject. It is amazing how difficult people find this subject to grasp. Of course, I’m sure the internet generates some kind of time distortion, because an hour can go by in just what seems like 5 minutes. Those internet “temporal anomalies” can be a killer on time management.

I look forward to connecting with you in the future.

      Hi Rebecca:

Thanks for stopping by. I’m so glad you liked the post.

Although I do have a network marketing business on the side, SocialBeeOnline is my main business as a social media manager. So, I don’t always have the same view that some network marketers have, where they live and breathe their business. I am very passionate about helping people, and I have found that helping people manage their social media is so satisfying and makes me really happy.

I very much agree with you that lessons are happening around us all the time. We really need to tune in and listen. Of course, that would mean that you have to slow down a bit, so you don’t go speeding past the most life changing parts of the journey.

  • We can’t go wrong following your advice. Good stuff! Almost twenty years ago when I first went online I mentioned it to my School teacher son. His advice was very close to yours. He added this caveat because I was bragging to him that I was on the informational Internet Super Highway. “Be sure Dad to stay in the right lane til you get up to speed.”

  • Hi Vanessa,

What a great analogy!! I love it. I did the “in a hurry to get there” formula and hated it and myself. Now I’m more the enjoy the journey, learn as much as I can, keep my eye on the goal but have fun along the way kind of guy.

It’s more me and it’s more fun.

Thank you for the kind feedback. And welcome to the “sane” traveler crowd. While most of us pass through each of the types of traveler at some point in our progression, the third type is by far the most balanced. This type of traveler knows that it is important to keep moving at a steady pace, but still take time to enjoy all that life offers.

I hope you’ll stop by again and again.

      Live with passion and purpose,

  • Vanessa…some great parallels. I tend to go back and forth between the the last two. At times I am going a million miles a second and missing the beauty of the relationships and the journey. Then I will swing over into a more “sane” lane and not only enjoy the journey but enjoy being on the right road heading for my desired destination.

This will stick in my mind and will remind me to be the third type of traveler you describe. Thanks a bunch!

I’m so pleased that my post has helped and inspired you. I will tell you what I have learned that helps to keep me in the “sane” lane… Take time everyday to walk, think, and reflect. I would recommend, at minimum, an hour. You’ll start to find yourself living in the sane mode more and more often.

  • Vanessa wonderful analogy! Analogies and stories are so effective in getting your message across.

I’m a combination of the 2nd and 3rd driver. I drive fast but do take time out to stop and smell the flowers. 65% massive action (pushing breaking through) and 35% allowing (attracting being present) I like it to be 35/65 and outsourcing and creating a Genius Team around me is helping to get there.

You need both active (massive action) and passive (law of attraction) energies. “Everything comes to those who hustle while they wait.” – Thomas Edison.

    Thank you for this post!

    To Your Genius,

      Eiji:

Thank you for your comment. I agree that we need both massive action and law of attraction energy. I’d say you are probably a full-time type 3 traveler. This type definitely takes action to move forward in their journey, but knows how to stop and enjoy life occasionally. Type 2 travelers just don’t know how to do that. They would never consider outsourcing and creating a Genius Team. (I really love that name, by the way)

Keep up the great work. I look forward to seeing you on my blog, or yours, again soon.

Thanks for stopping by. You are so right about the road rage. Unfortunately, too many marketers come from a position of lack. They believe that if someone else is successful, it means they will be less successful. So sad…

  • Vanessa,
I love metaphors and analogies. I could certainly identify with the different types of drivers. At times I am the more reckless one in my online business, jumping in to do things I may not be quite ready for, but gradually I learn the ropes. Also, when I hit those mudslides, it sometimes takes awhile to find the right help. Sometimes I have to sit patiently in the mud, knowing help is on the way.

  • Hi Vanessa,

I agree, lifestyle is important. If it doesn’t feel good, why do it.

I have adopted saying “I am going to have a play with” instead of of “going to work on”, which makes doing things more enjoyable.

  • Vanessa, I like not only your post but also your style of writing. You have a refreshing yet down to earth way of looking at and describing travelers on the Internet highway. I see a little of myself in all the drivers you present here. I usually aim to move forward at whatever pace I can handle that day and to enjoy the journey as it unfolds. No two days are alike and that’s good. In any case, I always learn something along the way. My favorite part is when I meet a fellow traveler like I met you here through TSA. By meeting you here you’ve helped me to look at my Internet journey in a new way and even better, you made me realize and appreciate that I’m not alone on this highway. Thank you, Vanessa, for making my day special! Happy trails to you :)

Thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment. I apologize for taking so long to reply. Been a bit under the weather, but on the mend now.

One of the great things about being on the internet is that we have the freedom to choose many more things than if we are working at a “JOB”. I love that no two days are alike. Without variety I tend to get bored and then I have to push myself to do things. That’s another reason I love the internet. I get to meet new people all the time and I love that.

I look forward to connecting with you again.

This is my first time visiting your blog! I’m glad you made a comment on my post so you got my attention! Instead of going to your last post, which is usual, I took a look at your site, and it’s impressive! I chose “lifestyle” for my first post to read.

I love the analogy you used! It’s more enjoyable to be the kind of driver that goes with the flow, enjoying the process of getting to the destination! It’s amazing to be the passenger with the different types of drivers! It can be an entirely different personal growth opportunity!

I look forward to networking with you!

Welcome to my site. I’m really glad you stopped by. Thank you for your kind words.

Many people tell me that these are stages in our learning and progression, but I much prefer the easy traveler scenario. I like to stop and check out the scenery and help others. I don’t even really remember going through the other stages, but perhaps I did for a short time. I’m pretty confident when it comes to technology, but was a bit hesitant when I first started marketing. And I’ve definitely never been of the “speed demon”, “get out of my way, or get run over” variety.

I’m glad I was able to add value for you. I hope you’ll come back and check out some of the other posts I have available. Your comments are welcome and appreciated.
