Why Are You Using Social Media?
It’s a brand new year, and hopes and plans are at their peak for business owners everywhere. Is your plan to create a new business this year? Or perhaps you want to build an existing business to new heights? Maybe you’ve been struggling to get your business going at all? Then again, it may be that you have an existing business and would like to take it in a new direction?
Whatever your situation, now is a great time to really get clear about your plans and aspirations for your business. For myself, I have done a great deal of soul searching around my existing business, knowing that I have another business in the wings that I am very anxious to build and grow.
So, let’s talk about some of the things I’ve been pondering and discoveries I’ve made recently. Perhaps they may help you in planning your future for your business.
I began this soul searching adventure because I just wasn’t completely happy with where my current business is and where I saw it heading.
First I looked at why I was in business in the first place. I have a deep, abiding passion for helping people. That is the main reason I became a social media manager. So many people seem to be drowning in an environment that is just like breathing fresh air to me. I knew I could make a difference in business owner’s lives. That passion is also why I am looking at putting my second business together.
Okay, if I was happy with my reason for being in business then why was I feeling this vague restlessness?
Maybe, I thought, it was the way I was marketing. I considered my purpose for using social media as a marketing venue. Social media is inexpensive and yet provides one of the best ways to reach a large audience. If I want to help a lot of people, I first need to reach a lot of people. So, marketing methods weren’t the issue.
Next, I considered the audience I was actually reaching. Oh, wait, I think I’ve fallen into one of the sly, sneaky traps in social media. I am having a great time networking and exchanging ideas with peers in my field, but that was the majority of who I was actually connecting with. It is easy to find yourself in this situation. People who are also in the same field have a very similar mindset. Facebook and Twitter will recommend these people to connect with because they have similar interests. But this is not my target market!
Bingo, I started a campaign to reach out to business owners that have nothing to do with internet or social media marketing, but are trying to learn how to use these tools. I have been contacting these business owners with helpful tips for their sites and their posts. And guess what? They are very receptive and appreciative for the help.
I feel like I have my mojo back. Social media has become fun again. It’s not that I don’t love and appreciate my peers. I do. And I will continue to connect with them regularly, but I will also continue to connect with new people who actually need my help. I also feel that this has re-energized me so that I can take time to start building my other business, about which I am very passionate.
So, what did I learn from all this? A few foundational questions that you absolutely MUST answer if you want to be truly effective and passionate in your business. They are:
- Why am I in business in the first place? (It’s never just about money)
- Why am I using social media as a marketing tool? (Or any other medium for that matter)
- Who is my ideal client?
- Am I reaching that ideal client on a daily basis?
I hope my journey has inspired you to take a step back and evaluate these questions. Even if you’ve answered them in the past, purposes change or get lost in the daily shuffle. Check in with yourself and make certain you are still on track with EXACTLY where you want to go and how you want to get there.

Vanessa, I was just about to enter 2011 without soul searching as you described. The foundational questions that you have listed are excellent. Your explanation of how you used these question and the results makes your post come alive.

Greetings, Vanessa
this is my first visit to your blog – and what a post to start off with!
I too did some major rethinking of just where my biz was headed and whether I was actually in sync with that.
Your questions were spot on guidance to stop all the introspection spiraling out of control and I’m thrilled to find that I could answer each one with renewed vigor and enthusiasm.
Absolutely delighted to share this ~ it’ll help a lot of folk this month, I reckon.

Thanks for being so open in this post Vanessa! Some great questions and thoughts…
It always comes down to 3 things:
1. Know your purpose
2. Know your target market
3. Know who you are and how you can help solve the problems of your target market
Once you know your purpose, you can usually fulfil it using various different businesses. The business then just becomes a vehicle for fulfilling your purpose.
In order to help people you have to have something you can help people with and you have to find a market of people who need help and have a problem.
Being able to separate yourself and differentiate yourself in the sea of social media coaches and online businesses is the challenge.
I have recently re-branded myself because of this. I found out what was missing in the industry and what problems people were having and then looked to myself to find out how I could create a solution to their problems.
If you’d like to talk about this at all, please get in touch with me through my blog or Facebook.
Many Thanks

Hi Vanessa,
Sounds like you have found your niche helping business owners maneuver the vast intricacies of social media! I appreciate that you also haven’t forgotten why you came into this in the beginning — to help people. Thanks for keeping to your priorities, and reminding the rest of us to do the same.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and for your comments. I truly appreciate them. If we are living with passion and purpose, I believe we will do great things. Sometimes it seems as though we get stuck, but that’s the time to re-evaluate. I generally find that I’m slightly off course at those times.

Vanessa,
In any business once you have figured out who your target market is you are half way there. So many people blindly try to market to the wrong people and get no results. Finding where the target market is, staying in communication with them and building a relationship and showing them how social media will help there business will keep you with repeat customers and clients. Great post.

Thank you for your comments. I completely agree that defining your ideal client is half the battle. This is what I teach my clients all the time. And I did know who my ideal client is. My deviation was that I wasn’t REALLY connecting to those ideal clients. We all need a reality check occasionally.

Hi Vanessa,
Thanks great that you have your MoJo back
It’s funny in the turn of a new year everyone is conditioned to think about their goals and where they want to be.
Now we need to condition ourselves to throw a “Happy New Year” on a monthly basis where we keep ourselves on track, re-assess and laser focus.
It’s great that you realized to start reaching out and connecting to those that were looking to get themselves online and needed help as oppose to those that were already online.

You’re right. It seems odd that we tend to evaluate at the beginning of the year and then assume we are on the right path until the next new year rolls around. Actually my soul searching adventure started several weeks prior to the new year. I just wasn’t feeling like my business was moving in the direction I really wanted it to. I’m glad I didn’t wait. I might have wasted several weeks or not bothered to evaluate at all.

Hi Vanessa,
great post and questions.
I especially like asking myself the why .. since it helps me to get inspired and then doing what I want(need) to do becomes so much easier and even fun.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Vanessa,
This is a very good point! Social Media is just that – connecting with like minded people, or at least that is what I have learned. It seems to me that if you want to make money from it, you have to develop something really useful to your Social Media contacts. Either provide something your peer group can use, or find somewhere else to promote yourself to! Good luck with your new direction.

I’m actually working on both aspects at the moment. I’m working on a product that will benefit my peers in the social media world, as well as providing a service to those in completely different niches. It will be interesting to see which is the better direction when I begin promoting my new product.
Thank for stopping by and leaving a comment.

Nice post Vanessa,
I asked myself the four foundational questions and it made me realize that I’m not reaching my ideal client. I’ve gotten sidetracked by my association with my peers. In doing so my ideal client is being ignored. No wonder my business has stalled! Time for me to do a little soul searching of my own to find an ideal balance between my clients and my peers.

Hey Vanessa,
This post did what a good post should…get me thinking
In fact, I probably won’t stop thinking about these things for a while. Which is good. There are so many ways to lose our focus. It’s great to read a post like this one to put things into perspective.
Look forward to hearing more great stuff!
